WHAT IS BACK PAIN?

Upper Back Pain

Upper back pain refers to a form of back pain that affects the thoracic vertebrae. There usually aren’t many cases of injury associated with the thoracic vertebrae in comparison to the lumbar and cervical vertebrae, because they are not as engaged in movement as the other two. Pain in this part of the back often occurs as a result of poor posture. Pain in this vertebrae from poor posture causes the back muscles to stretch out, resulting in back pain. Upper back pain usually radiates over a large area of the back, making it difficult to pinpoint the source of the back pain. If you’re looking for a chiropractor in Ronkonkoma to give you treatment, visit Connetquot Chiropractic today!

Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is more common than the upper back pain, and it involves the muscles, nerves, and bones around the back. The pain felt with this type of back pain varies, ranging from a dull steady ache to a sudden sharp painful feeling that leaves a person incapacitated. Lower back pain can be categorized based on the period of duration as acute pain (lasting less than 6 weeks), sub-chronic pain (lasting about 6-12 weeks) or chronic pain (lasting more than 12 weeks).

WHAT CAUSES BACK PAIN?

  • Nerve Irritation: lumbar disc disease, inflammation of the nerves, and bony encroachment can cause back pain. When nerves of the vertebrae are irritated by pressure or impingement by bones, this can lead to severe back pain.

  • Lumbar Radiculopathy: back pain caused by lumbar radiculopathy is as a result of herniated intervertebral discs, which cause nerve irritation. The intervertebral disc herniates as a result of wear and tear or from a severe injury. When the outer solid part of this disc wear off or weakens, the inner soft part protrudes out causing a condition known as a herniated disc. This herniation might lead to the irritation of the vertebrae nerve, which ultimately causes back pain.

  • Degenerative Bone and Joint Conditions: degeneration of the intervertebral disc is known as spondylosis. This occurs due to a reduction in the water and protein content of the cartilage, causing it to become thinner and more fragile as we age. The deterioration of this disc renders it susceptible to herniation and localized lumbar pain.

  • Arthritis: arthritis can lead to severe back pain and stiffness which is most prominent in the early hours of the day.

CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT FOR BACK PAIN

  • Manual Chiropractic Adjustments: our chiropractor in Ronkonkoma uses manual chiropractic adjustments to correct back pain. By using different techniques to strategically massage specific parts of the spine, we can provide you the comfort you’re looking for.

  • Instrument-Assisted Adjustments: this form of treatment for back pain is highly efficient. We employ the use of instruments such as a traction table, handheld instruments, or both to amplify the effect of the manipulations and to ensure proper placement of the bones and joints.

  • Corrective Exercises: specially designed exercises are important for those who just finished suffering from an episode of back pain. This helps to stretch and stimulate the stiff muscles of certain patients.

  • Lifestyle Adjustments: back pains can occur as a result of repetitive movements, like sitting for long hours at your desk or lifting heavy objects. Our chiropractor in Ronkonkoma will give you advice on how to adjust your lifestyle or working habits to reduce the risk of back pain.
